How to Compare Tow Truck Insurance Deductibles in Texas

A towing business can have different deductibles for damage to its own truck, a customer’s vehicle during a tow and vehicles kept at a storage location. Compare each exposure separately. Hancy’s Insurance Agency can help you review the options shown in your actual proposal and policy.

A quote request does not bind coverage.

Coverage information checked October 22, 2026. Available coverage and pricing depend on eligibility, underwriting and policy terms.

Make a separate line for each coverage

Start with your policy declarations and endorsements. Record the coverage for your tow truck, customer vehicles being towed and vehicles held at a lot or garage. For each, write down the limit, valuation basis, deductible and how that deductible applies. Ask about exclusions and conditions before treating a deductible as the full amount the business could owe.

Check the form as well as its name

Ask which form addresses a customer’s vehicle during towing and which addresses a vehicle at a storage location. Labels differ by insurer and state. For example, Progressive describes its Texas on-hook coverage as Garagekeepers Legal Liability and its storage coverage as Storage Location insurance. Explain the activity and review the wording rather than relying on the coverage label alone.

Ask whether the deductible applies per vehicle or per occurrence

One incident can damage more than one vehicle. Ask whether a deductible is charged for each vehicle, for each occurrence or under another rule, and whether a maximum applies. Request a written example using the number of customer vehicles your business may hold. Also ask how multiple coverages would interact when both your tow truck and a customer’s vehicle are damaged.

Use a simple covered-loss example

For illustration, assume an eligible truck-damage loss is $8,000, the coverage limit is sufficient and the deductible is subtracted once. A $1,000 deductible leaves $7,000 after the deductible; a $2,500 deductible leaves $5,500. Other policy conditions, valuation rules and uncovered costs can change the actual payment. Ask the agent to run the example using your proposed policy.

Compare annual savings with the extra amount you retain

Suppose two otherwise identical proposals differ by $300 in annual premium and $1,500 in the applicable deductible. Five years of $300 savings equals that $1,500 difference in this simplified comparison. Consider how the business would fund a loss, multiple incidents and downtime. The figures are illustrative; they do not predict claims or establish which option fits your business.

Bring lender, contract and operating details

Provide the tow-truck schedule and values, lenders, towing activities, customer-vehicle types and maximum values, storage locations and the greatest number of vehicles held at once. Include written customer or contract requirements, prior claims and the current coverage documents. Ask whether the proposed deductibles and limits meet those requirements and what information could change the quote.

Review changes before the next job or renewal

Tell your agent when you add a truck, change storage arrangements, take on different towing work or accept a contract involving higher-value vehicles. Ask whether limits, deductibles or endorsements need to change and when any change becomes effective. Keep the policy, claims contacts and written quote comparison available to the person who manages the business’s insurance.

Tow-truck deductible questions

Is there one deductible for every towing claim?

Do not assume so. Different coverages and loss situations can have different deductibles or application rules. Review each relevant coverage and endorsement.

Does a higher deductible always produce the same saving?

No. Request actual quotes using the same vehicles, operations, limits and other terms. Compare the total annual cost and the applicable deductible instead of assuming a standard saving.

What if several customer vehicles are damaged in one incident?

Ask how the policy applies its limit and deductible to that scenario. Per-vehicle and per-occurrence rules can produce different results, so use a written example for the actual form.

Can the customer-vehicle deductible differ from the truck deductible?

It can depend on the coverages selected and insurer terms. Ask the agent to show the deductible for your own truck, the towing exposure and the storage exposure separately.
