Start with Texas requirements, then consider the financial loss you could face after an accident. The legal minimum is a starting point for a coverage discussion, not a personalized recommendation.
Texas minimum liability limits
Texas requires at least $30,000 for injuries per person, $60,000 for injuries per accident and $25,000 for property damage. These limits are often called 30/60/25. Liability coverage pays covered losses you cause to others; it does not replace every type of protection for your own vehicle.
Build a coverage checklist
- Consider higher liability limits against your assets, income and exposure.
- Review collision and comprehensive for your vehicle, especially financing or lease requirements.
- Discuss uninsured and underinsured motorist protection.
- Ask about personal injury protection and medical payment options.
- Consider rental needs and a deductible you can comfortably pay.
Your circumstances matter
Tell your agent about every household driver, your commute and business use. Delivery, rideshare or other work may require additional coverage or a different policy. Explain any leased vehicle requirements before requesting quotes.
Review the actual policy
Ask the agent to show which limits apply to each coverage and which losses are excluded. Compare written quotes on equal terms. A quote request alone does not bind insurance, and policy wording controls coverage.
See the Texas Department of Insurance auto guide for the minimum limits and coverage explanations, and the OPIC shopping guide for questions to ask.
