An SR-22 is proof of financial responsibility filed by an insurer. It is not a substitute for an insurance policy or a standard insurance card. If Texas DPS requires an SR-22, confirm your specific notice and deadline before arranging coverage.
How long is it required?
Texas DPS says an SR-22 must be maintained for two years from the most recent conviction or judgment requiring it. A lapse can lead to additional license action and reinstatement requirements. Your individual case and DPS instructions determine the filing you need.
Arrange the correct filing
- Give the agent the DPS notice and requested effective date.
- Explain whether you own a vehicle and how you drive.
- Confirm the insurer offers the required SR-22 filing.
- Verify the filing was sent and check your DPS status.
- Keep required coverage continuously in force.
What if you do not own a car?
Ask about non-owner coverage and whether it fits your situation. Describe access to household, employer or regularly used vehicles. Do not assume a non-owner policy covers a vehicle you own or every vehicle available to you.
Plan ahead for renewal
Monitor payments and renewal dates. Contact your agent before a change or cancellation so the required filing is not interrupted. Confirm that all other reinstatement requirements have been handled directly with DPS.
